Symbolism and Imagery

Williams employs a variety of symbolism and imagery throughout the play.

Locate the following symbols in the play. What might they suggest:

  • The glass menagerie
  • The unicorn
  • prince charming’s kiss
  • The little silver slipper of a moon

Christian Imagery in the Play

Discuss the significance of the following three features:

The lighting for Laura should resemble that “used in early religious portraits of female saints or madonnas.”

The scene where Tom tells his mother that a Gentleman Caller will appear Williams entitles “Annunciation.”

The dressing of Laura for the Caller’s appearance should be “devout and ritualistic.”
