Through Shelly’s story, Victor’s creation really seems to have trouble getting along in society. But is it really his fault? He did some pretty bad things but was it his ostracism that caused him to act or his actions that caused his ostracism? Quite a chicken and egg.

Let’s look at your own opinion for a minute. Imagine you were the boss of a company who was hiring a new member of staff. But these features in the order of importance:

  • Qualifications
  • Reliability
  • Hygiene
  • Ability to do the job
  • Social skills
  • Appearance
  • Distance from workplace/transport
  • Time management
  • Creativity

Now look at the article by HR Magazine and see what a group of surveyed bosses said.

This is a perennial issue today. Think about the following advertisements:

What does this advertisement tell us about what is valued by a society?

It would appear that appearances mean more than we care to admit.
