Paper 2 Review

Things Fall Apart

Start by reviewing the novel. Try the shmoop summaries as a place to start.

Test yourself. How much do you remember about the novel?  (don’t feel you need to be able to answer some of the more detailed questions here. Just use it as a chance to review some of the broader themes we explored in the text.

Do some thinking:

  • What are the four significant contexts present in a discussion of this text?  What are the key issues surrounding these?
  • Why is Part 1 so significant as a representation of culture?
  • How might this text be as relevant today as it was when it was published (1958)?
  • How was this text subversive? Why is literature so effective at conveying this? How do literary features support this?

A Doll’s House

Start by reviewing the play. Try the shmoop summaries again, though there are plenty of others!

Test yourself: try these questions.

Do some thinking:

  • How might this text be as relevant today as it was when it was published (1879)?
  • Why was it significant that there is no moral conclusion to the play? Which literary element supports this?
  • The play was written to be a realist or naturalist (what are these again?) production. What is the effect of this? What might be lost or gained by abstracting the play?
  • What literary features has Ibsen employed? To what effect?
