Celebrate Banned Books!

6 Oct

Any idea what Northern Lights (The Golden Compass), Twilight and Captain Underpants have in common? They have been challenged as being inappropriate to their intended audience! Its amazing how many novels have been challenged over the years – including some classics such as Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, Alice Walker’s The Colour Purple and even Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (a book just about everyone reads!).

We have just missed it (sorry!) but the American Library Association organises banned book week from September 25th to October 2nd.

You can also check out the lists of challenged books by year and author at the American Libraries Association website.

And saving the best till last – check out this online comic all about “a teenager growing up in Oklahoma, and his fight to keep his favorite fantasy series, The Chronicles of Apathea Ravenchilde, in his public library”.

So what are you waiting for? Get yourself onto that ALA website and figure out what illicit stuff we have waiting on the shelves of the library!
